Sapporo White Illumination
The Origin of Illumination Events in Japan; The Progression of the Art of Light
Sapporo White Illumination was the first illumination event held in Japan, which colors the city of Sapporo every winter. It was first held in 1981 with about 1,000 lights decorated in Nishi 2-chome square of Odori Park. From 2015, the event underwent a major change. Now visitors can enjoy a truly Sapporo event, a unique "art of light," created by combining the white snow and beautiful sparkling lights.
The origin of large scaled illumination events that decorate cities. As a forerunner for illumination events held throughout Japan, the event adds new productions to the repertoire each year.
